A horizontal well screen is placed in the groundwater near the water table if the contaminant is a light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) or near the aquitard (lower level) if the contaminant is heavier than water (DNAPL). The well can extract the free phase product or arrest the movement of the groundwater to restrict the spread of contaminants. Wells can be installed proactively to control groundwater levels and movement in the case where a spill may occur from process on liquid storage.

Typical LNAPL‘s and DNAPL‘s include:

  • Diesel fuel LNAPL
  • Gasoline LNAPL
  • TCE DNAPL
  • EDC DNAPL
