Two or more horizontal wells are installed, one well— below the water table— injects air. The upper well— in the vadose or unsaturated zone— applies a vacuum to remove volatile organic compounds (VOC) contaminants.

This program can be used individually as air sparge or soil vapor extraction. Air sparging increases the oxygen supply to enhance the activity of naturally present bacteria, which consume contaminants.

Air Sparge/SVE methods have been effectively used in chemical plants, fuel storage, tank farm, and airport site clean up applications.
