Numerous applications of horizontal wells can be used in conventional deep mining or open-cast mining. Major applications include the extraction of H2S and Methane from surface exposure in open cast mines and the control of groundwater in both in-use and abandoned mines.

Mine tailings are major point sources of contamination. Horizontal wells have been used to remove water and remediate contaminant plumes emanating from tailing piles.
